Land Clearing in Western NC — Trees, Brush, Stumps, and Lot Prep

We clear lots for new builds, open up overgrown acreage, push back fence lines, and grind stumps. Family-owned out of Connelly Springs, NC, with Cory running the equipment on most jobs. Whether it's a half-acre house pad or 10 acres of brush you've been meaning to deal with for years, we can handle it.

What We Do & How We Do It

Whole lots, selective cuts, fence lines, stumps, brush hogging — and the debris handling that goes with all of it.

Typical Land-Clearing Scope

  • Whole-lot clearing for a new build — trees, stumps, brush, root mat off the building footprint and driveway path.
  • Selective clearing — leave the trees you want, take out the ones you don't (view cuts, opening pasture, fence-line clearing).
  • Brush hogging — knock down overgrown fields and old farm ground gone back to brush.
  • Stump removal and grinding — full extraction with the excavator or grind in place.
  • Fence-line clearing — clean cut so you or your fence contractor can run posts.
  • Debris handling — burn pile (where permits allow), haul off, or pile for the landowner.

Equipment: [Phil: excavator with thumb, skid steer with mulcher, stump grinder, brush hog details]

On sloped WNC sites we strip and stockpile topsoil on flat ground, work cross-slope to limit rutting, and pull back to grade with the topsoil when we're done.

The Three Most Common Calls

"I bought a lot and need it cleared for a build," "My fence line is grown up and I can't even walk it," and "I've got 5 acres of brush that used to be pasture and I want it back."

For lot clearing tied to a build, we coordinate with whoever's doing the grading and septic so we don't clear something that has to be re-graded later — or we just do all three (clear, grade, septic) since we self-perform all of it.

NC Permits & Burn Rules

Most land clearing on private property doesn't need a state permit — but four exceptions matter.

For most land clearing on private property, no state permit is required. The exceptions:

  • Disturbing more than 1 acre → NC DEQ Sedimentation & Erosion Control plan, regardless of what you're doing with the dirt.
  • Open burning → North Carolina Forest Service open-burn permit (free, online or by phone). Required for any pile burn outside the home-yard exemption.
  • Stream buffers or wetlands → don't clear into a regulated buffer without checking with NC DEQ first. Fines are real.
  • Stormwater watersheds (parts of Catawba and several other counties) → may have additional restrictions on land disturbance.

We'll tell you upfront which apply to your job and pull what's needed.

FAQ

Can you burn the debris on-site or do you haul it off?
Depends on the county, the time of year, and whether you've got a place to burn safely. We can pull the NC Forest Service burn permit and burn on site when conditions allow, or haul to a transfer station / dump site if not. We'll quote both options.

Will clearing the lot mess up my future grading?
Not if it's done right. We strip and save topsoil, work to leave the site at usable grade, and coordinate with the grading scope if there is one. Cheap clearing crews leave deep ruts and a buried root mat — that costs more to fix later than doing it right the first time.

How much land can you clear in a day?
Highly variable — 1 acre of light brush might be a day; 1 acre of mature hardwoods with stump removal could be 3–5 days. We'll quote on a per-job basis after seeing it.

Land Clearing in Western NC

Every clearing job in Western NC starts with understanding where the water goes. Mountain terrain concentrates runoff — a cleared acre can shed 10x more runoff than the same wooded acre. We protect streams, install temporary erosion controls before breaking ground, and schedule seeding as quickly as possible after grading.
